Fishy Tom Pop Up Rig
I'll be honest, I'm just not a fan of feathering for mackerel!
I understand it's a means to and end, and in certain locations it can be a quick and effective way of grabbing a few mackerel for bait or food. However, fishing should be far more than just a means to an end, and there are lots of venues where feathering simply doesn't work very well (all of our local beaches for starters!).
This is where pop up fishing comes into it's own. It is a far more productive way of catching mackerel (scad, gars, bream...) on most venues and will bring a far greater level of enjoyment when you see your rod tip hoop over with fish on!
As always, check out the various videos I have done on pop up fishing, and you'll see just how good a method this is!
This Fishy Tom Pop Up rig is the exact rig I use when I'm catching mackerel on my local beaches. It is a 2u1d flapper rig with 3ft 0.28 fluorocarbon snoods, a whopper popper for maximum lift and a size 6 wormer hook to hang your little strip of mackerel on.
Bait it up, chuck it out and enjoy the fun!
